Burns Night January 29, 2007

Thanks to Merrie B for inviting us to her house to celebrate Robert Burns’ birthday.  My boyfriend and I were finally able to try  some of the “famous” Scottish food that we didn’t get around to eating while in Scotland this summer.  The menu included potato and leek soup, haggis, tatties (mashed potatoes), and neeps (turnips).   For dessert we had treacle, which is sponge cake in a can, and shortbread cookies.  Our choice of liquid refreshment was Strongbow, a dry cider.  I enjoyed most of the food and can definitely see myself eating the haggis and tatties again.

Merrie B’s husband was gracious enough to read a few line of Burns’ poetry.  Although we didn’t understand a majority of what was being said it sounded great with the authentic Scottish accent.  Later that night we sang a little karaoke — not very Scottish but fun nevertheless!
