Average Joe and I have fallen in love with a new TV series on the Discovery Channel: Planet Earth.  The series is filmed with special HD cameras and is made to be viewed in HD.  (For those without HD, the series is also shown on “regular” TV.)  Of course, with the big screen plasma TV we have it looks absolutely incredible!  Some of the ocean shots were so vivid and clear I felt as if I could simply stretch out my hand and touch the creatures as they drifted by.  Even more amazing is the lengths the BBC went to in order to create this series.  They have taken over 3 years to gather footage and many of the animals have never been filmed before.  One sequence showed a snow leopard in the Himalayas stalking its prey.  The camera man filmed the entire hunt — something no scientist had ever seen.  Another sequence featured the mating ritual of several different birds of paradise, something that had never been filmed before.  Over the course of the 3 hours (we watched 3 episdoes back-to-back-to-back) I must have muttered “Oh wow!” and “That’s amazing!” at least 20 times.  I highly recommend everyone check out the series for at least 1 episode.
